The wear layer is the clear film over the printed surface, and it is the single number that decides how long a vinyl floor looks new. Twenty mil and above is what manufacturers rate for light commercial use, which in practice means a rental you do not want to re-floor every turnover, a busy family entryway, or a house with large dogs and their claws in it. Costs more per square foot than a 12 mil floor and outlives it by years.
